Responsible AI for Defence (RAID) Toolkit

Published in 2023, the RAID toolkit is grounded in responsible AI frameworks from NATOUK, USAU and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Classification of AI Systems (2022), and obligations under Article 36 legal reviews of new weapons, means and methods of warfare. It is a globally leading resource to help industry transparently communicate how AI and autonomous systems function and are intended to be used in the military domain to enable ethical, safety and legal evaluation in line with commitments to Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM).

The RAID Toolkit was funded by Defence Science and Technology (DSTG) through the Next Generation Technology Fund (NGTF), written by military lawyers and AI ethicists, delivered and published by Trusted Autonomous Systems Defence CRC. The RAID Toolkit project was sponsored by Jericho Disruptive Innovation, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Warfare Innovation Navy (now Maritime Integrated Capability) Royal Australian Navy, and the Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation and Coordination Office (RICO) Army.

The RAID Toolkit is a research output and not Defence policy. It does not represent the views of the Commonwealth of Australia.
