The Defence Artificial Intelligence Research Network (DAIRNet) brings together scientists, policymakers, legal experts, procurement experts and end-users to develop effective ways to use artificial intelligence (AI) to support Australia’s Defence capabilities. As a unique and national network, DAIRNet aims to develop and support a community of practice for the Defence AI ecosystem, from researchers, academia and industry to Defence end-users, from concept to capability.

DAIRNet are excited to share the highlights from our recent workshop, co-hosted with The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI. Experts from Defence, industry, and academia came together to explore a critical topic: responsible AI, with a focus on mitigation strategies and capabilities for Defence and security.

A pivotal moment was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), University of South Australia, and The Alan Turing Institute, strengthening strategic collaborations between the UK and Australia. This partnership will unlock cutting-edge AI and data science research, driving innovation forward.

Dr. Mel McDowall, Director of DAIRNet, shared “We are excited to be partnering with Defence, UniSA and Alan Turing Institute, who are globally recognised as the premier institute for AI and data science, to accelerate the responsible use of this critical technology.”

Thank you to all participants for their invaluable insights and inspiring discussions. While we’ve only scratched the surface, we’re excited to continue this journey of collaboration and responsible AI development.
