Director, Research Training, UQ AI Research Network, The University of Queensland

Tim Miller is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Queensland. His mission is to amplify the capabilities of expert decision makers using artificial intelligence.

Professor Tim Miller’s research draws on machine learning, reinforcement learning, AI planning, interaction design, and cognitive science, to help people to make better decisions. He has done work on areas including explainable AI, human-AI mixed-initiative planning, and human-centered decision support.

Professor Tim Miller from The University of Queensland will present a seminar on Thursday, 21 March 2024.

In this talk, I argue that we need to re-frame how we conceptualise explainable decision support. Recent research shows that the current paradigm of giving a recommendation/prediction and explaining it does not really improve human decision making (with some exceptions). I explain why I believe this is the case and propose a machine-in-the-loop conceptualisation of decision support, which I call Evaluative AI. Generalising this idea, I will discuss why this is a problem with AI outside of just decision support tools and discuss some high-level considerations for real-world impact for research in artificial intelligence.
