Dr Sara Webb is an astrophysicist and lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology, specialising in time-domain astronomy and artificial intelligence.

Her research applies machine learning to detect and classify transient cosmic events, such as stellar flares and gravitational wave counterparts. She also leads national space education initiatives and was named a Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia honoree and a Superstar of STEM.

Dr Sara Webb from Swinburne University of Technology, will present a seminar on
Thursday, 28th August 2025.

Title: AI use bridging astronomy and space domain awareness

Abstract: As the volume of data from astronomical surveys continues to grow, artificial intelligence has become an essential tool for making discoveries at scale. In this talk, I will explore how AI is used to uncover transient and variable phenomena in vast datasets from time-domain astronomy, highlighting recent applications in stellar flares, and anomaly detection. I’ll also discuss how the same techniques, and the astronomical mindset, can be adapted to challenges in space domain awareness, such as identifying resident space objects and potential hazards in Earth orbit. By bridging astrophysics and near-Earth space monitoring, this talk will showcase the power of cross-disciplinary AI to unlock insight both deep in the cosmos and just above our heads.
