Dr. Carl Seubert is the Chief Technology Officer for Australasian Space Innovation Institute (ASII).
Carl has driven research in spacecraft autonomy, specifically formation flight since his PhD at Coloardo University.
As a Chief Researcher of SmartSat CRC he architected the research portfolio of over 150 projects and created Scarlet Lab for spacecraft autonomy and formation flight R&D.
Prior to this Carl spent nearly a decade at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he led technology programs as a senior Guidance and Control Engineer and managed the spacecraft Formation Control Testbed. He has worked on future Mars landers, Earth observation missions and his control algorithms are headed to Jupiter on the Europa Clipper mission.
He leads the Australian team for the ANZ radar mission concept, Takahē, that is enabled with a spacecraft formation and is also Board Chair for the NSW Space Research Network. tions including autonomous systems, human-centred robotics, and Defence.

Title: AI in orbit: Autonomy for the Space Domain
Abstract: Space has always necessitated autonomy. From the earliest spacecraft operating beyond the reach of real-time human control to today’s increasingly complex missions and constellations – spacecraft must sense, respond and make decisions with limited resources or connectivity to Earth. The rapid evolution of AI and edge computing is now creating an opportunity to take this much further — we are seeing a shift from state machine execution, human in the loop, to fully autonomous constellation management and collision avoidance.
This seminar will showcase how the Australasian Space Innovation Institute is advancing Australian technologies in spacecraft autonomy, onboard AI and intelligent sensing. This includes recent research and technology demonstrations in orbit as a carry-over from the heritage projects of the SmartSat Cooperative Research Centre.
It’s not just putting AI on satellites, it’s architecting autonomous technologies to build space systems that are aware, connected, and smart – delivering innovation to the users. This seminar will explore the specific space technologies of ASII and where the trajectory could take Australia next.
